Did You Know?
Last year in local disaster relief, we responded to 70 local disaster incidents and assisted 231 individuals with close to $34,500 in direct aid (food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and household items).

Could You Save a Loved One?

Last year, we trained more than 14,100 people in lifesaving skills, including CPR. We currently have more than 200 instructors, and both of these numbers are up dramatically from just a few years ago.

Your Children Are Learning From Us

We taught Adult CPR/AED in several new school districts last year, training and certifying 4,428 students and teachers within our four counties, thanks in large part to a generous grant from ADM. We also trained 8 instructors, 251 community members, and 1680 pre-K through 6th graders in various non-certification children’s classes.

Disaster Services

We responded to 70 local disaster incidents last year, and helped 231 people with close to $34,500 in direct aid (food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and household items). We also provided mass care canteen services to 640 first responders on disaster scenes including the Farmer City hostage stand-off, the Argenta search and recovery, and the Warrensburg ammonia spill, along with numerous fires.

When bad things happen here is how we respond.

WE SALUTE OUR 2010 HEARTLAND HEROES

Eight-year-old Dirk Byrun, of Findlay, Illinois, for the past three birthdays, has asked his friends and family to give him gifts that benefit a pre-designated charity. Dirk saw an opportunity he could use to help others. His committment to benefitting those less fortunate has earned him the honor of being named a 2010 Heartland Hero.

Dirk is the winner of this year's Young Courage Award, presented by Land of Lincoln Credit Union.

Jane Franklin is on a mission to feed hungry families in Moultrie County. In creating Christ's Closet, she partnered with First Christian Church in Lovington and raised money to make a sustainable resource for hungry families in her area.

We present Jane Franklin with the 2010 Citizenship Award, presented by Niemerg Family Winery.

Sergeant Gerrick Smith died in his country's service in Afganistan just fourteen months after his high school graduation.

"He was always helping out his friends", said longtime friend Tyler Craven.

"He made the hard times better, always goofing around and making everyone laugh", said Lauren Dust, a soccer teammate.

We award the 2010 Valor Award posthumously to Gerrick Smith, presented by Red Carpet Promotions.

Anthony McNeil gets our Everyday Hero Award. After a car crashed into two trees just outside his home, Anthony leaped into action. Using his bare fingers, he pried open the door of the burning car to pull the injured driver to safety.

Later, Captain Jeff Pritts of the Decatur Fire Department said, "I still don't know how he was able to bend a car door using only his hands. Anthony McNeil is a world class hero." Presented by St. Mary's Hospital.

Congratulations to all of our Heartland Heroes!

How the Red Cross Supports Military Families

We assisted with 93 Service to Armed Forces (SAF) cases last year. We have eight volunteers and paid staff members trained and on-call to handle SAF cases, and we are one of the few chapters in Illinois to provide 24/7 local coverage for SAF calls from families of those serving in the military.

Learn more about Service to the Armed Forces.

Help Keep Blood Supplies Ready
Last year, we collected 11,114 units of lifesaving blood in our four counties: DeWitt: 955, Macon: 7967, Moultrie 646, Shelby: 1546.
Can you help keep the blood supply at an adequate level? Learn more.

Volunteers on Duty - Around our Area
Though we are far removed from the sea, remnants of Hurricane Gustav caused flooding throughout our jurisdiction, and we assisted families in Farmer City, Decatur, and Bethany. Winter run-off in December also caused flash flooding in Lovington prompting us to open a shelter at Lovington Elementary School.
